“From a close harmony pop group to one of the most popular Welsh underground bands ever…”

Man, een Britse band, werd eind van de sixties opgericht aan de monding van de rivier Tawe, in de thuisbasis van Swansea City FC, als een reïncarnatie van de Welshe close harmony popgroep The Bystanders. Meer dan 50 jaar later bestaat de band -uiteraard na bijna evenveel wissels en assists in de line-up- nog steeds. Gelijk een goede wijn, mogen we stellen, is Man na al die jaren nog beter geworden. Merk op dat uit Wales nog sterren oprezen als “Tiger“ Tom Jones, Bonnie Tyler, John Cale, Shakin’ Stevens en bands als Manic Street Preachers, Feeder, Stereophonics en Racing Cars.  

Bij de start in 1968 bestond de band uit leden van The Bystanders, die in de UK probeerden de top te bereiken. Toen ze in 1962 werden opgericht, bestond de klassieke line-up van The Bystanders uit Owen Money (aka Gerry Braden), maar hij werd vervangen door Vic Oakley (zang), Micky Jones (gitaar), Clive “Clint” John (keys), Ray Williams (bas) en Jeff Jones (drums). In 1968 wilden enkele leden de muzikale richting veranderen naar een meer psychedelisch/westkust gitaargeluid, waardoor Oakley vertrok om vervangen te worden door Deke Leonard en veranderde de naam van de band in Man. Na enkele succesvolle lp’s (‘Back Into the Future’, 1973 - ''Rhinos, Winos and Lunatics’, 1974 – ‘Maximum Darkness’, 1975) splitte de band in 1977. Ze reorganiseerde zich in 1983 en 1992. Van de eerste Man line-up zijn zanger/gitarist Micky Jones (1946-2010), zanger/gitarist Roger “Deke” Leonard (1944-2017) en toetsenist Clive “Clint” John (1945-2011) ondertussen al overleden. Toetsenist Phil Ryan stierf in 2016, bassist Will Youatt in 2017 en bassist John McKenzie in 2020. Man is sinds 2011 gevestigd in Duitsland en bestaat momenteel -het aantal wijzigingen in de line-up zijn zonder pen en papier al lang niet meer bij te houden- uit: Martin Ace (zang, bas), zijn zoon Josh Ace (zang, gitaar), James Beck (zang, gitaar), Malcolm Morley (keys) & Shane Dixon (drums).

Het live album ‘Faith – Live @ Theaterhaus Stuttgart, March 10th 2016’ verscheen in het voorbije jaar bij MIG-Records. Het is een dubbelalbum (met dvd) van het concert dat in 2016 opgenomen werd, met de bedoeling dat het de releaseshow zou zijn van het toen actuele album ‘Reanimated Memories’ (2015). Het artwork is erop gebaseerd, onderbroken door wat live en snapshots van de band. “No Solution”, “Nothing Fails Like Success”, “The Ballad of Billy Lee”, “We Know”, “In Time”, “The God Delusion”, “One More Ride on the Waltzers” en “Ordinary Man” zijn de nummers uit hun laatste studio album. “Spunk Rock” komt uit hun 1969-album ‘2 Ozs of Plastic with a Hole in the Middle") en hun andere “favoriete” nummers “Many Are Called, But Few Get Up”, “Romain”, “C'mon” en “Bananas” uit hun tiende album ‘Maximum Darkness’ (1975). Man-boegbeeld Phil Ryan -zijn bijdrage aan het geluid van Man waren duidelijk- stierf op 30 april 2016, voordat de cd/dvd kon worden uitgebracht.
